Y ears of benefit cuts have led to the poorest 8 year olds dying at 10 times the rate of the most wealthy children ("Is a healthy retirement only for the rich?" 23.6.23 by Eade Hemingway ) The Guardian reported in December 2023 that m alnutrition and rickets admissions to hospital have tripled in the last 10 years. The benefit cuts being considered now by Redbridge Council will make the poor suffer more. The Guardian ran a story on 7th February saying: "The thinktank said living standards for the poorest tenth of families, after adjusting for inflation, remained 18% below 2019-20 levels even after accounting for government support – delivering a financial blow worth £4,500 in today’s prices." Last night, residents were blocked from speaking out against Labour cuts which will make the poor even poorer. Cllrs Canal & Johnson tried to let us speak but Labour stopped them. We had a brief chant of "shame on you" and then left the public gallery. The video below shows what happened. An earlier blog showed our deputation was passed, but then blocked when Syed Siddiqi of the Greens. Our campaign needs to be better organised next year when more cuts are planned.
